Best Movies of 2017

Let’s preface this by saying that any ‘ Best of ‘ is at best the best of what you’ve seen. Even movie critics don’t watch every movie that is released in any given year. Studios put out hundreds of movies. There literally isn’t enough time in a year to watch every movie released even if you were to watch movies 24 hours a day every day.

So, having said that, 2017 has, for the most part been a major disappointment. Wonder Woman, Spiderman Homecoming, The Mummy, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, King Kong, Alien Covenant, War for the Planet of the Apes, Baby Driver, John Wick 2, Life, and Cult of Chucky, all fell short of expectations. Not one of these movies made me say ‘ Damn I want to watch that again right now ‘. Mind you they all had their moments and they weren’t bad movies, they just weren’t movies that made you go ‘ WOW ‘. Some parts were even almost too disturbing to watch. Like Peter Parker fawning over Ironman like he has a schoolgirl crush.

The best movies were the ones I wasn’t expecting to impress me.  The Fate of the Furious was the biggest surprise, because I’m generally not into movies that are heavily into racing, but I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed it, Get Out and Split were movies that were disturbing but worth watching more than once, It comes at Night was the best surprise movie of the year.

The best movie so far this year I have to say is the black n’ white version of Logan. Releasing that movie in a black n’ white version and turning Logan into a cynical and  ‘ I don’t care let her die it’s not my problem ‘ character was sheer genius.  Logan has always been somewhat of an anti-hero but I think this movie made the most of that attitude.

I’m hoping the ones I haven’t seen yet…Justice League, It, Dunkirk, Blade Runner 2049, Thor Ragnarok, Bright, Atomic Blonde, Jumanji, and The Hitman’s Bodyguard don’t disappoint.
