Do not buy online at Hudson’s Bay Co.

To start off let’s give a little background on Canada’s once proud leader. Incorporated in 1670 the Hudson’s Bay Company was a leader in fur trading, even acted as it’s own Government ( in Rupert’s land ) for about 200 years, until they sold the land to Canada. They even printed their own money in the 1800’s. In the 1960’s and 1970’s it became a dominant force in department stores with the acquisition of Morgan’s, Zellers, and Simpsons, amongst many others. And over the years it would acquire Saks, Towers, Kmart, etc.

Suffice it to say it was a giant in various forms since 1670. In recent years it has had to downsize and sell off many stores and close out of the European market to put it on a stronger financial setting. It was also hacked in 2018 and more than 5 million credit cards were breached.

So, now what’s my beef with the great and powerful Hudson’s Bay Company? My daughter bought me a tee-shirt that was so nice and comfortable that I wanted more. As it was a gift I didn’t want to ask her where she bought it, so I naturally Googled the tag and found it was sold by the Hudson’s Bay. And to my surprise they accepted PayPal, which is what I generally use for online purchases. What, I ask you, could possibly go wrong? A highly reputable store, that accepts PayPal, a perfect situation.

Of course I ordered 3 tees, with the expectation to buy more later if the order arrived without issue. Next thing I know I get an email saying my order was cancelled. Cancelled??? No explanation whatsoever. It couldn’t have been a money issue because there was more than enough to cover the purchase. No response to my email as to why the order was cancelled. Was it an address issue? Who knows. Skip ahead a few days and the Hudson’s Bay is still holding my money in pending status in PayPal. So off goes another email asking why they are holding money after the order was cancelled. Even their website says they only hold it for 3 days, and it’s been more than 3 days.

They sent me the generic email saying that they are looking into it and will contact me within 48 hours. 48 hours pass still no word. So I contacted PayPal who told me they could do nothing but it will automatically be released by them in 2 more days if the Hudson’s Bay does not release it. Well I doubt they will, so I guess I have to wait 2 more days.

So if you are thinking of ordering products online from the Hudson’s Bay, be forewarned. They may cancel your order without explanation or cause. They may not return or release your funds even though you paid in good faith. All you might get is generic emails that promise you a resolution that never comes.

I will never buy from them again after this experience.

UPDATE:  Well they finally did respond, and they finally did release my funds, and they did offer to redo the order at a 15% discount and waive the shipping fees. But not until after I had already put in a complaint to the BBB. Maybe it was a coincidence, maybe they were not aware that I had put in a complaint ( even though I told them I was going to ), maybe they would have responded and made that offer anyways, but that’s a lot of maybe’s. At any rate I declined their offer.
