Andrew Breitbart, the webmaster poster of misleadingly edited tapes designed to discredit black people everywhere has been invited to attend a digital Town Hall hosted by ABC news. I’m not someone familiar with the criteria, under the law, that is necessary to meet the standard of libel. I only know that an innocent woman working for our government, one Shirley Sherrod, appeared in one of those misleadingly edited tapes he posted on his website and lost her job. He didn’t show the entire of her speech, just the part that made her look as if she was a racist against white people and using her position to punish white people needing assistance. The part of her speech, which she was using to show how her attitudes had been changed by personal experience, became who she was as a person, and how she got it over on the man while doing her job.
Was Mr Breitbart aware that this video tape was edited? He claimed he received it from an unspecified “someone else”. Did he take the time to verify it’s truthfullness? Apparently not, since he only used the part that was misleading and damaging to Shirley Sherrod’s reputation. When caught, he blamed the current administration for jumping the gun and firing her. It was all President Obama’s fault. They didn’t investigate the allegation. The fact that he posted it on his website without doing the same thing to start out with wasn’t his responsibility. Sorry Mr. Breitbart, I believe it was your responsibility. Not doing so makes your site, in my mind, nothing more than a digital tabloid rag. You give journalism a bad name.
In Twitter, on Friday night, a number of us were loud and vocal against what we thought was to be Andrew Breitbart giving commentary on election night. Some of us, including myself have threatened an ABC News boycott. ABC news has countered with a statement that he’s not part of the broadcast team, will not be paid for his time and is only an invited guest to the digital Town Hall as a political commentator. I see no reason why a broadcast medium feels it’s fine to invite this type of lack of integrity to it’s function unless it’s pandering to smear campaigns.
Honest people remember what Andrew Brietbart did to Shirley Sherrod. We remember that he posted James O’Keefe’s FALSE ACORN tapes. Tapes which O’Keefe had to turn over to the California Attorney General’s office to avoid prosecution. Tapes which Andrew Brietbart never apologized for, and he may have been involved in the severely misleading editing. This is a person that ABC News feels is a ‘political commentator”?
My honest and not so humble opinion is that the powers that be at ABC are out of their mind. This is a slap in the face to every journalist who does the work and presents their findings in an honest, straightforward manner. With the integrity which is so sadly lacking in the Andrew Breitbarts of the world. A move which is going to result in a boycott, in my home, of ABC News programming. When a broadcast company lends it’s name and creedence to the type of behavior Brietbart engages in, it’s time to shut it off and find my news elsewhere. Anyone care to join me?
