I am thoroughly disgusted with those who claim that the raid on the compound that ended with the death of Osama Bin Laden was illegal. Some of them are Pakistani people who, by the way, profited to the tune of 20 Billion dollars we have dropped into their coffers since the 9/11 tragedy. Some are Americans who will find fault with everything our President accomplishes. Not because he isn’t doing the right thing, but because…well…I hate to think it has anything to do with the color of his skin. And that’s all I’m saying about that.

Don’t get me started on our news media. I have been relying on Reuters and the BBC for my information. There should never come a point in life where news is no longer factual, unfortunately that has happened, in my humble opinion, to our mainstream media. Our media is picking those stories they wish to feature and none of it has anything to do with news, and a great deal to do with swaying public opinion.

A case in point here would be Senator Kyl’s statement to Congress that “90% of Planned Parenthood’s business is abortions.” That hit the news in a big way. Anti-abortionists posted signs saying that outside our local Planned Parenthood clinic. However, when he made the claim that his statement was not intended to be taken as truth, and he had that statement expunged from the Congressional record, no one said a single thing. Why? Frankly it’s because the information went out to people who believed in it which was it’s intended purpose. Pure and simple manipulation of emotions.

It’s much easier to manipulate emotions these days. The internet allows people to express their views and find those views accepted as truth because we no longer care about truth. The only thing we truly care about is propaganda because it furthers that which we perceive as our cause. It divides us and in doing so creates an environment where no one wins. There are only sides of issues over which we battle daily. One side never listening to the other because we fail to understand that the truth lies somewhere between those sides.

We’ve become a society that wins by forcing others to live under the constraints of our opinions, even when we’re wrong. We fail when we refuse to listen. We fail when we set a course for all based on the agenda of the few that benefit from that course. We are failing as a country, as a people when we make our decision based on the half truths that we intentionally look for to bolster our own ideas, never considering the consequences until it’s too late.

We the people are handing our country over to the Murdochs, the Trumps, and the Kochs of this world because we have failed to uphold our own responsibility to this country. We have allowed ourselves to wander the path of small mindedness, mean spiritedness and selfishness. We have abdicated our responsibility to our nation by allowing money to talk and control our news media.

We’ve forgotten the history of every single country that revolted against aristocratic rule and we are creating that rule here in America by our refusal to do anything except be led like sheep to the shearing. We are being fleeced by the rich and their corporate agenda and we are aiding and abetting our own fleecing by buying into the propaganda, the half truths and outright lies our mainstream media broadcasts. A media, might I add, that is outright owned by the very corporations that hold the shears.

  1. Anita, I’m old enough to remember a world before the internet when people volunteered for civic duties in their hometowns and the news was really news, not opinion based blogs. We’ve become too extreme left and right. This is preventing us from getting anywhere in my humble opinion.

  2. It is a relief to see someone else write so eloquently on a topic that matches my own opinion of ‘sheep.’ People won’t see because they prefer the ‘blinders to reality’ that they wear. I agree totally with everything you wrote. Thanks for this, Butterose!
