Why I rarely Tweet anymore

When I joined Twitter , like most people who aren’t there to market a product, I thought it would be a great way to meet new people, connect, and promote my non-commercial website ( the TAZ ) …

and at first…for about a month or two it seemed to live up to my expectations.

I could ignore the marketers who were trying to sell the pie-in-the-sky schemes to make you money or get more followers…I could ignore the scammers trying to pitch their Twitter games, products, and spamming my DM box with unwanted junk…I could even ignore the seemingly endless streams of tweets that were begging for more followers as if more followers was essential to their self-esteem…

I could tolerate the people who never said anything…they’d just post automated tweets about life, famous quotes, etc…I still have no idea what the purpose of that is, but to each their own…

what I couldn’t ignore or tolerate was the gross incompetency of those running ( in charge of ) Twitter, who are entrusted with the responsibility of keeping things in working order.

Constant downtime, slow loading, at times the inability to delete favorites, etc…and the worst of it…

missing people you are following…( not people following you, they come and go…but people ‘ you ‘ are following )…

I estimate that Twitter has arbitrarily unfollowed at least 800 people without my consent…400 of which was all at one time, which included 32 people on my Best Twitters list, who, as soon as I realized that it happened to some of them, I went through my list and refollowed them and posted tweets saying  ‘ Sorry, but I didn’t unfollow you, Twitter did!  ‘

…it seems every time I go on Twitter I’m missing people ‘ I ‘ am following…

and for the most part you have no idea who they were, whether they were friends or complete strangers…whether they think you did it or wonder why you kicked them to the curb…

and for the most part you’ll never know if you are following thousands of people, unless you go through your entire list of people you’re following in the hope you might notice someone missing from it…

so…

I can’t really be bothered with a site that will foster connections with people and then arbitrarily rip them out from under your feet at any time…

I have about 250-300 people, of the 2600,  that I am following right now that I consider to be my core friends…irreplaceable people….most of which can be found on my Best Twitters list or my Top-Twitters that will likely follow you back list…

and they’re the only reason I even bother to pop in to Twitter these days. Honestly, if I could get them all to join up here I wouldn’t have any reason to ever go to Twitter again.

In conclusion…Twitter just didn’t live up to the hype, or my expectations…it’s full of problems and quirks, and those running it don’t even seem to care as long as the site remains popular and keeps getting mentioned in the Media…

it’s ironic that a social-networking site is so un-tuned to meet the needs of sociability.

That’s my take anyways…yours might differ…if you have something to add please leave a comment.

Last week someone stated that they were going to begin to unfollow everyone who hadn’t spoken to them or RT’d any of their tweets. You should have seen the number of RT’s and comments that person got immediately after. Twitter should advertize itself as unsocial media because that’s truly what it is. It’s all about self promotion, prescheduled tweets and numbers. Quite a few of the people I used to follow post their sales pitches from Facebook rather than taking the time to actually show up in Twitter. My core group is around 50 people and none of them are there for anything but the fun of it.

I agree, there’s no sense to have a lot of followers …the only exception being marketers who need volume just to make those few sales…
and, like you said, you can’t read all the tweets, and unless you have nothing at all to do but Tweet all day you can’t respond to everyone either…sometimes I would get 20-30 people talking to me and i would have a hard time even keeping up with that many. So normally I’d only respond to the ones I talk to the most, and hope the others understand time constraints and don’t feel like I’m ignoring them on purpose.

All of it bothers me at any given time. Plus the fact that they make it so hard to submit valid complaints. I still can’t access my Favorites and it’s been nearly 2 months now.
The importance of quantity over quality that far too many seem to feel is necessary tends to make me wonder about folks. If they have that many that they follow, how do they read all those tweets? Are they filtering out the tweets of some people and only reading their favorites? Why bother to follow that many, why not just limit who they choose to follow?
