Probably the most anticipated UFC event of 2021 is the trilogy between Poirier and McGregor at UFC 264, scheduled for July 10, 2021 at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. ‘ Scheduled ‘ being the operative word, as any UFC or MMA fan, in general, will tell you that ‘ anything can happen ‘ between now and then. All in all it should be a show-stopper, both participants are able to bring it on and give it their best. The possibility of a boring fight isn’t even a consideration.
A little look back at their previous two encounters…
September 27, 2014 : UFC 178 : it was Dustin’s eleventh fight in the UFC at the time and was 8 wins 2 losses; by contrast Conor was a newcomer with only 3 previous UFC matches under his belt, all victories. The fight ended at 1:46 of the very first round with a KO of Poirier. Conor destroyed Dustin, in a fashion that looked like a Sunday stroll through the park. Making it look easy would be an understatement.
January 24, 2021 : UFC 257 : almost six and a half years later, they meet again. The fight ended at 2:32 of round two with a TKO of McGregor. This time the fight was far more evenly matched. It was like Dustin evolved his game over the years and Conor was, well, just Conor. Dustin had not just caught up but had exceeded the abilities of Conor, while we saw nothing new from Conor at all. This is a game that requires you to evolve or get left behind. No matter how good you were, or how much better you were at the time, eventually others catch up.
It will be interesting to see if Conor has anything new to offer in this upcoming fight, if he doesn’t I expect an early win for Dustin.
